Malta’s pyrotechnic heritage
Public celebrations under the Order of St John featured musket fire, cannon salutes and mascoli, traditions that still echo in the Maltese village festa. Fireworks remain central to that culture, and the Maltese festa was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023.
The national festival began in 2002 and subsequently opened to overseas participants, becoming the Malta International Fireworks Festival. The 2026 issue commemorates its 25th edition and the skill of the local fireworks community through a vivid night-time design.
